On 30 September 2026, a majority of the Icelandic national broadcaster RÚV's board expressed their intention to continue Iceland's boycott of the Eurovision Song Contest 2027 if Israel participates. Six of the nine board members signed a statement urging RÚV's director to inform the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) of their position and reiterated their previous call for Israel's exclusion from the contest.
The board's stance follows a resolution adopted in November 2025, which also called for Israel to be excluded. Stefán Jón Hafstein, chairman of RÚV's board, confirmed to RÚV that the resolution remains valid as the EBU has yet to address the board's concerns.
It is currently unclear whether the broadcaster's director has formally notified the EBU of the board's latest position.
Iceland was one of five countries, alongside Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands, and Slovenia, to boycott the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 due to Israel's participation.
Iceland’s Eurovision History
Iceland debuted in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1986 and has participated 37 times since. The country achieved its best results with two second-place finishes by Yohanna in 2009 and Selma in 1999.
Iceland has finished last four times: in 1989, 2001, 2018, and most recently in 2024. Since the introduction of semi-finals in 2004, Iceland has qualified for the grand final 12 out of 21 times. It remains the only Northern European country yet to win the contest.
