Czech Television (Česká televize) has officially confirmed that Czechia will not participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2027. The broadcaster cited ongoing budget adjustments and the significant programming, production, and organisational demands of the contest as reasons for the decision.
The announcement was posted on Česká televize's Eurovision Instagram account, emphasizing that the withdrawal concerns the 2027 edition only, with no set date for a return. The broadcaster stated:
"We evaluate each edition of the contest separately, so we do not wish to speculate at this time on when Czech Television will rejoin the Eurovision Song Contest."
In addition to withdrawing as a competitor, Czech Television revealed it does not plan to purchase broadcast rights for the Eurovision 2027 event. However, Czech Eurovision fans can still watch the official online stream via the Eurovision YouTube channel and vote for their favorites; these votes will be counted in the "Rest of the World" category.
The withdrawal aligns with a broader financial strategy whereby Česká televize aims to save around CZK 350 million (approximately €14.3 million) in 2027. The savings plan includes job cuts and reducing or cancelling several programmes to address uncertain future budgets.
Statement from Česká televize
Česká televize expressed gratitude to all past Czech Eurovision representatives and supporters. They described Eurovision as an exceptional platform for connecting music, creativity, and audiences across Europe.
EBU Response
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) expressed regret over Czech Television's non-participation, acknowledging the financial pressures many public service broadcasters face. Martin Green CBE, Director of the Eurovision Song Contest, stated:
"We very much hope that Česká televize will return to the Contest when circumstances allow. They will always be welcome."
Background on Czechia in Eurovision
Czechia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 14 times since their debut. After years of poor results, including zero points in initial years, the country withdrew for five years before returning in 2015. Their best result to date was a 6th place finish by Mikolas Josef in 2018 with the song "Lie To Me." The country qualified for the Grand Final for the first time in 2016.
